Tucked along the west bank of the Mekong River in Southern Laos, Champasak feels wonderfully removed from the rush of the modern world. That sense of tranquillity is part of its charm – but it does mean a little planning helps. Here is everything you need to know about getting to Champasak and reaching Residence Bassac.
The gateway: Pakse
The main gateway to the region is Pakse, the largest city in Southern Laos, which lies roughly an hour’s drive north of Champasak. Pakse has an airport with domestic connections to Vientiane and seasonal regional flights, making it the most convenient arrival point for most visitors.
By air
Flying into Pakse is the fastest option. From the airport, the journey south to Champasak takes about an hour by road. Our team can arrange a private transfer so that a driver is waiting for you on arrival – simply let us know your flight details.
By road
Champasak is well connected by road:
- From Pakse: around one hour by private car or taxi.
- From the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don): travellers coming up from the south can reach Champasak in a couple of hours.
- From Thailand: the border crossing near Chong Mek / Vang Tao connects the Thai city of Ubon Ratchathani with the Pakse area, from where you continue to Champasak.
Crossing the Mekong
Champasak town sits on the western bank of the Mekong. Part of the pleasure of arriving here is the river itself, which has shaped local life for generations. However you arrive, that first glimpse of the wide, slow-moving Mekong is a sign that you have truly reached Southern Laos.
Let us take care of the logistics
The easiest way to reach us is to leave the details to our team. Residence Bassac can organise airport pick-ups and private transfers from Pakse, the 4,000 Islands or the Thai border, so that your journey is smooth from start to finish. Get in touch before you travel and we will make sure everything is arranged.
Once you arrive, the pace slows, the river beckons, and the temple of Wat Phou waits just down the road. Begin planning your stay and let the journey become part of the experience.
